Hartalika Teej vrat is observed as a Nirjala fast, meaning devotees refrain from both food and water. The fast is traditionally broken on the following day after sunrise. In 2026, Hartalika Teej is being observed on September 14, while the vrat paran will take place on September 15.

Hartalika Teej is observed on the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Women observe the fast and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, praying for an unbroken marital bond and a happy married life. Here is the paran time, method and important rules to follow.

On the day of paran, devotees should complete their morning routine and take a bath before wearing clean clothes. Red, yellow or green clothes are considered auspicious, and women traditionally complete their 16-shringar.

After this, worship and perform aarti for Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Offer sindoor to Goddess Parvati and apply some of the offered sindoor to your own maang.

The items offered during the puja should then be gently moved. The idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha made from sand or clay should be immersed as per the traditional practice.

Before breaking the fast, seek the blessings of elderly family members. The vrat can then be opened with the bhog offered during the puja, including soaked black gram, jaggery and fruits.
