Know why you should offer mustard oil to Lord Shani Dev

Lord Shani is considered the god of justice. He refers to planet Saturn and is a Sanskrit word. Shani, the giver of ear-fruits, gives fruits to every one according to their deeds. Shani is also one of the auspicious Navagraha per the Hindu Astrology. That is why to get the blessings of Shani Dev, different types of remedies are adopted, one of which is to offer mustard oil. 

According to the scriptures, it is believed that by offering mustard oil to Lord Shani, he is pleased, due to which you get rid of Sade Sati, Shani Dosha or Dhaiya. Along with offering Mustard oil to Lord Shani, one must also light a mustard oil lamp, which is considered auspicious. 

Why people offer mustard oil to Lord Shani Dev?

The practice started because of Lord Hanuman: According to the legend of Ramayana, when the bridge was constructed from Rameswaram to Lanka by Ram’s army, Lord Hanuman had the responsibility of looking after the security. One day, when Lord Hanuman was praying to Lord Ram sitting under a tree, Shani Dev arrived and asked Lord Hanumaan to open his eyes and fight with him. Also, it is believed that once Lord Shani was imprisoned by Ravana. 

In such a situation, when Lord Hanuman came to Lanka in search of Goddess Sita, he saw Shani Dev in captivity. When Shani Dev requested Hanuman ji to free him. He freed Shani Dev from captivity and threw him far away from Lanka, so that he could reach a safe place. When Lord Shani got hurt after being thrown, Hanuman ji applied mustard oil on his wound to reduce the pain of Shani Dev. Which made Lord Shani comfortable and he was happy with Hanuman ji applying mustard oil. This made Shani Dev say that in the coming times, my blessings will always remain on the devotee who will offer me mustard oil. 

How to offer mustard oil to Shani Dev 

- Offering mustard oil to Lord Shani makes you get rid of many problems. By the grace of Shani Dev, you get the boon of success in every work along with happiness, prosperity, health and wealth. 

- Saturday is considered the best day to offer oil to Lord Shani. Because it is the day of Shani Dev. 

- You can apply oil by visiting Shani's temple on Saturday. While offering oil, keep chanting the mantra  "ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं स: शनैश्चराय नम:"

- Black sesame, black urad dal can be offered to Shani Dev in mustard oil. With this, there will be peace and happiness in your home. 

- Light a mustard oil lamp in front of Shani Dev or under Peepal. Before offering oil, you must see your face in that vessel. If possible, donate mustard oil to a poor person, this will make Shani Dev happy and your luck will start shining. 

 
- On Saturday evening, put a little sesame and a coin in a mustard oil lamp under a Peepal tree and burn it and go straight home.
