The Kashmir Valley and regions of Ladakh have witnessed a fresh spell of snowfall in the higher reaches, while the plains faced an onslaught of heavy rains. The temperature across the valley has dropped significantly due to the weather change.
Gulmarg tourist resort in north Kashmir continued to reel under extreme cold as the minimum temperature stayed below the freezing point at most places in the valley, officials said on Monday. The resort recorded a low of minus 10 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive night, MET officials said. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, was the one of the two places to record minimum temperature above freezing point as the minimum settled at 0.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, the officials said. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh's Shimla city received fresh snowfall on Monday morning even as most places in the state are reeling under severe a cold wave.
The valley remained cut off from the rest of the country since Thursday as both surface and air traffic remained suspended due to snowfall. The Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Leh highways have been closed for traffic as all flights to and from the Srinagar international airport were also cancelled yesterday
The Met officials said that most of the tourist places in Kashmir, including Gulmarg and Pahalgam, received the snowfall. Traces of snowfall was also witnessed in Srinagar early in the morning, an official said.
