"The GST Implementation Committee of GST Council has approved extension of the due date of filing GSTR-3B return for the month of September 2022," the CBIC tweeted on Friday.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has launched a special drive to clear all pending GST refunds by month-end.
Currently, businesses are required to digitally sign the GSTR-3B form while filing the monthly return and paying taxes. However, with offices shut due to the lockdown, businesses are unable to generate a digital signature that has led to delay in filing returns.
Come January 1 and GST payers would need to fill only 4 GSTR-3B returns in a year instead of 12 returns at present. In a major reform, the government has eased the return filing experience for the GST taxpayers with the introduction of Quarterly filing of Return with Monthly Payment (QRMP) Scheme.
Tax officials have been directed to follow up personally with these defaulting taxpayers so that their GSTR-3B returns due for October get filed by Nov 30.
GSTR Filing FY19: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) has extended the deadline for filing GST annual returns (GSTR-9) and Reconciliation Statement (GSTR-9C) for FY 2018-19 by two months till December 31, 2020.
In a major relief to the GST taxpayers, the government has decided to cap the maximum late fee for Form GSTR-3B at Rs 500 per return for the extended tax period of July 2017 to July 2020 subject to the condition that such returns are filed before September 30, 2020.
GSTN said that the GST return filing system is working within expected limits. "Had it not been so, how more than 11.52 lakh GSTR3B (October) returns could have been filed yesterday with about 1.82 lakh returns filed in a peak hour," it said
The GSTN also decided the much simplified new return system may be launched on January 1, 2020, the Bihar Deputy chief minister said.
"It is ranging from 25-27 per cent despite extension of deadlines. The GST Council will discuss the issue in its meeting on September 20," said an official.
GSTR 9 is an annual return to be filed yearly by taxpayers registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST). It consists of details regarding the outward and inward supplies made or received under different tax heads.
The move, officials believe, would help check Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion.
The GSTR-3B of a particular month has to be filed by the 20th day of the subsequent month. The deadline for September return filing was October 20.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said all taxpayers excluding a few exceptions like composition dealers shall file one monthly GST return in place of multiple filings currently required in a month.
The last date for filing initial GSTR-3B sales returns for any month is the 20th of the subsequent month. Businesses, however, can continue to file returns after that date on payment of a late fee.
Around 56 percent of the registered taxpayers filed their GSTR-3B returns for October within due date.
Data regarding businesses that paid taxes under the Value Added Tax regime but haven't filed GST returns has been shared with field offices, the Central Board of Excise and Customs has said.
The Council, headed by FM Arun Jaitley, is scheduled to meet on November 10 to consider lowering of the 28 per cent GST rate on certain common use items, government officials said.
The deadline for filing the initial returns in GSTR-3B for September under the Goods and Services Tax regime was October 20 midnight.
