Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled readiness for a peace agreement with Ukraine under a framework discussed with Donald Trump, provided Kyiv accepts certain compromises. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for direct talks and a face-to-face meeting with Putin.

Russia hit Kyiv with its hypersonic Oreshnik missile, only the second time it has used the nuclear-capable weapon in the war with Ukraine. The strike is believed to be a strong message to the West including the US amid Trump's military aggression across the world.
At the heart of the negotiations lies the contentious territorial dispute concerning the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, known as the Donbas. This is “the most difficult point,” Zelenskyy said. He said these matters will be discussed at the leaders' level.

It was not immediately clear if the smoke was the result of a direct hit, which would mark an escalation in Russia's air campaign. Russia has so far avoided targeting government buildings in the city centre.

The Donbas has long been the most Russian-leaning region of Ukraine, home to a significant Russian-speaking population. Even a decade ago, many residents expressed strong resentment toward the distant government in Kyiv.
