Congress on Tuesday sought action against the Sacred Heart School here, which had expelled Ruchika on flimsy ground of non-payment of fees, saying that the move added to her trauma that ultimately led her to commit suicide.

In a letter to the Chandigarh Administrator S F Rodrigues, AICC national spokesman and Ludhiana MP Manish Tewari demanded that the UT administration must set up a committee to recommend as to what action should be taken against the school.

14-year-old Ruchika, who was molested by former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore in 1990, consumed poison on December 28, 1993 and died the following day. Rathore, who retired in 2002, was awarded a six-month jail term by a CBI court here last week for molesting the budding tennis player.

"Had the school behaved in a humane manner, probably Ruchika, who did not ostensibly have the moral support of a mother, may have not been driven to commit suicide," he said.

"Rather than trying to mitigate the trauma of a child barely in her teens, the school chose to behave in a manner which was utterly insensitive...and compelled her to leave the school as ostensibly her presence had became an embarrassment for Rathore's daughter who tragically was Ruchika's batch mate and of the same age," he said.

"The school has been adding insult to injury by dismissing the matter as an old issue," he added. PTI
