Iran launched another wave of missile strikes on Israel and Gulf Arab states on Thursday, underlining its continued offensive capability even as Donald Trump claimed the threat from Tehran was close to being neutralised and predicted the war would end soon.
Iran’s attacks on neighbouring countries, along with its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, have disrupted global energy supplies, with repercussions extending well beyond West Asia. The move has emerged as one of Tehran’s most significant strategic advantages in the conflict.
The United Kingdom is planning talks with nearly 30 countries on reopening the strait, through which about 20 per cent of global oil trade passes in normal times, once hostilities subside.
Trump has maintained that the route, which was open before the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, could be reopened by force, but suggested that responsibility should lie with other nations. In an address on Wednesday, he urged countries dependent on Hormuz oil flows to “build some delayed courage” and act.
The conflict has caused heavy casualties across the region. More than 1,900 people have been killed in Iran, while 19 deaths have been reported in Israel. Over two dozen people have died in Gulf states and the occupied West Bank, along with 13 US service members.
In Lebanon, where Iran-backed Hezbollah is engaged in fighting Israeli forces, more than 1,200 people have been killed and over 1 million displaced following a ground offensive. Ten Israeli soldiers have also been reported killed there.
