New Delhi: Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu will take oath as new Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Sunday at 11 am. The CJI will be administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a five-day visit to the US, will be unable to attend the swearing-in.

Justice Dattu, due to retire on December 2, 2015, will have a tenure of over 14 months.

Justice Dattu will succeed Chief Justice RM Lodha who held the post from April 27.

Born on December 3, 1950, Justice Dattu was appointed as Judge in the Karnataka High Court on December 18, 1995.

He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court on February 12, 2007 but was transferred to the Kerala High Court on May 18 that year.

He joined the Supreme Court as a Judge in December 2008. He is due to retire on December 2, 2015.
