West Bengal defeats Odisha in the war of Rosogolla, CM Mamata Banerjee ''happy and proud''

The Geographical Identification authorities ruled out today that it is Bengal where the popular rosogolla originated.

After two and a half years, the spat between two states Odisha and West Bengal over Rosogolla, a popular Indian sweet has finally been resolved. In the bitter but sweet tug-of-war, West Bengal has been declared the winner.The fight which was over the origin of rosogolla.

The Geographical Identification authorities ruled out today that it is Bengal where the popular rosogolla originated. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is currently in London was thrilled with the news. She congratulated people via micro-blogging site, Twitter. ''Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI... status for Rosogolla," Banerjee  tweeted. 

West Bengal and the neighbouring state Odisha were engaged in a legal battle over the origin of the cottage cheese-based sweet since June 2015.  While Odisha claims that the sweetmeat originated from the Jagannath Temple in Puri in 12th century, West Bengal says that confectioner Nobin Chandra Das created the sweet in the 1860s. 

Bengal informed the GI registrar that the one available in odisha is of a different variety. Bengal's rosogolla is off white and spherical in shape. The World Trade Organisation's GI is a sign that identifies a product's origin place.
