STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) — In Georgia, Stacey Abrams is gaining national attention for her potential to become America's first black female governor.

John Barrow's campaign for secretary of state is notable for a different reason. He's the most prominent white man running as a Democrat in Georgia this year.

He's navigating the politics of a state undergoing rapid demographic shifts and a party that is putting a premium on gender and racial diversity.

His campaign has taken on special meaning as Democrats accuse the current secretary of state of nefariously holding up new voter registrations.

Barrow is an increasingly rare figure in Deep South Democratic politics, where many white men of his generation became Republicans over the past two decades. He's one of two white male Democrats on Georgia's statewide ticket this year. Democrats in the state's congressional delegation are African-American.
