The elections to seven Municipal Corporations and 116 Municipalities, including the newly constituted ones across Telangana, were held on February 11 (Wednesday), and the counting of votes is being conducted today. The ruling Congress has taken a lead in two corporation divisions across Telangana, as per the latest trends.

Telangana Municipal Election was held peacefully with over 73 per cent of voters exercising their franchise on Wednesday in the municipal elections which passed off well barring minor skirmishes at a few places. This year, the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation witnessed a triangular contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the ruling Congress. 

The initial trends will be out soon. In the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation polls 2020, the BRS or the TRS emerged as single largest party, winning 33 wards.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had won 13 and six wards, respectively. Eight independents had also won in the 2020 elections in Karimnagar.

In the previous elections held in 2020, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which was the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) back then, won the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation. It bagged 33 wards, and party leader Sunil Rao Yadagiri was elected as the mayor.

The Karimnagar Municipal Corporation has 66 wards, according to the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC). 

The previous local body elections were conducted by the State Election Commission (SEC) in Telangana in 2020.

The Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) had organized the polling in 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations of the state. However, polling was not organised for municipal corporations of Hyderabad (GHMC), Warangal and Khammam, and six municipalities because their terms have not expired yet.

According to the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC), the entire state had witnessed a 73 per cent turnout for the local body elections.
