Bangladesh Election Results 2026 LIVE: PM Modi speaks to BNP Chief Tarique Rahman

BNP chairman Tarique Rahman was seen leaving from a mosque offering Jummah prayer. 

BNP sets for a landslide victory by winning 213 seats. Jamaat & allies bagged 76 seats.  However, the Election Commission (EC) has not yet released the final figures. An EC spokesperson, cited by PTI, stated that vote counting in some constituencies was still in progress and that official results would be declared within a few hours. 

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee congratulated BNP chief Tarique Rahman saying, "My hearty congratulations, shubhonandan, to all my brothers and sisters, all the people, in Bangladesh. My advance Ramazan mubarak to all of them.

For this great victory, my congratulations to my Tarique-Bhai, his party, and all the parties. Pray, you all be well and happy. Wish that our relations with Bangladesh be always cordial." 

'Anti-India' face Sarjis Alam who once gave threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conceded defeat in the Bangladesh Election 2026. The student leader who rose to prominence during the anti-Hasina movement lost to BNP candidate Muhammad Naushad Jamir in Pachagarh-1 constituency. Sarjis got 1,66,126 votes while BNP candidate Muhammad Naushad Jamir bagged 1,74,403 votes.  

BNP has won 208 seats, while Jamaat suffered a major set back by bagging only 69 seats. However, the Election Commission (EC) has not yet released the final figures. An EC spokesperson, cited by PTI, stated that vote counting in some constituencies was still in progress and that official results would be declared within a few hours. 

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was born on November 1, 1951, in Keraniganj, Dhaka, to Gannandra Chandra Roy and Sumoti Roy. He held ministerial roles in BNP-led governments during the 1990s, with key positions like State Minister for Environment and Forests and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock. Roy has also a family bonding with BNP as his son Amitav Roy is married to BNP leader Nitai Roy Chowdhury's daughter Nipun Roy Chowdhury.

BNP's Hindu candidate Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has won from Dhaka-3 by defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Shahinur Islam. BNP's Hindu candidate Gayeshwar Chandra Roy obtained 98,785 votes, while Jamaat candidate Md Shahinur Islam garnered 82,232 votes. 

PM Modi has congratulated BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and vowed his support for Democratic Bangladesh. 

Tarique Rahman, the son of former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia has completed his schooling from Shaheen High School and College. He passed both the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) with flying marks. After completing his schooling, Tarique entered the University of Dhaka and studied International Relations. But he did not complete his graduation and left in his second year to focus on his textile and shipping businesses.  

BNP is heading for a massive victory in Bangladesh election, the party has won 181 seats. BNP chairman Tarique Rahman has called for special prayers today across the country after Juma prayers.

US ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen has congratulated BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman for the historic victory. "Congratulations to the people of Bangladesh on a successful election and to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Tarique Rahman on your historic victory. The United States looks forward to working with you to realize shared goals of prosperity and security for both our countries," he posted on X.  

PM Narendra Modi has congratulated BNP's Tarique Rahman for the landslide victory. "I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals," PM Modi posted on X. 

BNP chairman Tarique Rahman has been elected from both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6, as per the unofficial results from Election Commission. BNP has won 181 seats, Jamaat and allies- 61 seats, Islami Andolon Bangladesh- 1. 

Experts believe regional geopolitics will be a central test for Rahman's leadership. Relations with India have been strained recently, particularly during the Hasina years and amid rising regional strategic competition. Rahman's own party manifesto calls for relations with neighbours based on equality, fairness and mutual interest, including addressing border issues, water sharing and cooperation on trade and security.

In the run-up to the country's general elections, Rahman campaigned on a platform of change and national renewal. Key themes included, anti-corruption and clean governance. He has also promised to tackle entrenched corruption and restore accountability in public institutions. Rahman has vowed to invigorate Bangladesh's economy with job creation, foreign investment and support for farmers and families. 

As per the latest trends, BNP has won 170 seats, Jamaat and allies bagged 52 seats. Islami Andolon Bangladesh has won one seat, others- 6 seats. Tarique Rahman was born into Bangladesh's most prominent political dynasty. He is the son of former Presidents and Prime Ministers Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, two towering figures in the nation's post-independence political arena. Educated in Bangladesh and abroad, Rahman rose through party ranks as a strategist and organiser, becoming the BNP's de facto leader even during periods when his mother was formally in charge.
