Confident Group chairperson Dr Chiriankandath Joseph Roy died by suicide on Friday following searches by income tax officials at his office located on the Langford Road in Bengaluru, Karnataka. As per preliminary information, 57-year-old Roy shot himself inside his chamber with his pistol.
He was taken to the Narayana Multispecialty Hospital in HSR Layout Sector 3 of Bengaluru, but he succumbed to his injuries. The police are now conducting further probe into the incident. Meanwhile, the IT department is yet to issue a statement over Roy's suicide.
Who was CJ Roy?
Roy was the founder and the chairperson of the Confident Group, which is a real estate and infrastructure conglomerate that was founded in 2005 and its headquarters are in Bengaluru. Apart from the real estate business, the company is also in the hospitality and the educational sectors.
According to the information available at Confident Group's website, Roy was a doctorate in business administration and the SBS Business School in Switzerland's Zurich. Under his leadership, the group earned a name for itself in the real estate sector for its construction quality and timely project delivery. He also helped Confident Group expand its business in other verticals.
The company was involved in around 200 projects in Bengaluru, Kochi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). "Our founding principles have been well practiced in the form of delivering what we commit," Roy had said in his message available at Confident Group's website.
Why did he die by suicide?
Initial reports suggest that searches were conducting against the Confident Group even in December last year. On Friday, the IT department was conducting more searches at his office, when the 57-year-old went inside his chamber and shot himself using a pistol. He died in the hospital later.
Officials are currently probing the incident. "The IT department was questioning CJ Roy inside his office on Friday. During that time, he went to his chamber and shot himself. At that time, officials were present in the office building but not in the room," said official sources.
