The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Monday arrested five suspected terrorists from the city's Shakarpur area after an encounter. According to the information available, two of the five arrested men are from Punjab. The remaining three are from Kashmir.

Reports say that the five arrested men have links to Khalistan. Police have also recovered weapons and other incriminating materials from them. Besides, police have also seized rugs from the possession.

They have been identified as Shabbir Ahmed, Ayub Pathan and Riyaz rather (all from Kashmir). The remaining two are Gurjeet Singh and Sukhdeep Singh (both from Punjab)

"The group was backed by ISI for Narcoterrorism. The name of the terror organisation is yet to be confirmed," news agency ANI quoted Delhi Police as saying.

Meanwhile, the city police have stepped up vigil and intensified checks following the arrest of suspected terrorists.

"We have apprehended five persons after an exchange of fire. Weapons and other incriminating material have also been recovered from their possession," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah said. Some of them are suspected to have links with terror groups but this is being verified, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.

According to police, one of the five arrested men is involved in the assassination of Shaurya Chakra winner Balwinder Singh in Punjab.

Shakarpur is one of the neighbourhoods in east Delhi. It is situated between Laxmi Nagar and Mayur Vihar.
