The Congress Central Election Committee has selected following candidates for the ensuing general elections to the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra. Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan will be contesting polls from Karad South constituency. Dhiraj Vilasrao Deshmukh, son of former Maharashtra CM Vilas Rao Deshmukh, will contest Maharashtra Assembly Polls from Latur Rural constituency.

Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has released its first candidate list for Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections. It is worth noting that after its stellar initial success just after its formation, Raj Thackeray's MNS has not been able to win many seats in the state or national elections.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside its judgement which introduced measures like prior inquiry before the arrest of an accused under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989.

The apex court observed that no such directions should have been passed.

The court recalled directions which mandated prior sanction for the arrest of public servants and private persons. The court also recalled the requirement of preliminary enquiry before registering FIR.

Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on issues relating to Article 370 and given government 4 weeks to file response to petitions challenging abrogation of Article 370. The constitutional bench will hear the matter next on November 14. 

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday slammed at External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for covering up Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "incompetence" saying he should teach some lessons on diplomacy.

Rahul Gandhi also said that Modi's endorsement of US President Donald Trump has caused serious problems with the Democrats for India.

"Thank you Jaishankar for covering up our Prime Minister's incompetence. His fawning endorsement caused serious problems with the Democrats for India. I hope it gets ironed out with your intervention. While you're at it, do teach him a little bit about diplomacy, " the Congress leader said.

A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Arbai village here, his family members said on Tuesday.

The 65-year-old farmer identified as Lalli was found hanging in his house on Monday, SHO, city police station, Baljeet Singh said.

No suicide note has been recovered.

Lalli's son Pushpendra said his father committed suicide as he was upset over his inability to repay a loan of Rs 80,000.

Police is probing the matter.
