One dead as under construction Mumbai metro pillar falls on rickshaw and car in Mulund, 5 arrested

The officials said that the incident happened around 12.20 pm in Mumbai's Mulund when a portion of the under construction metro pillar collapsed. It left around three to four people injured.

Mumbai:

A portion of an under construction metro pillar collapsed on an autorickshaw and a car in Mumbai's Mulund area on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least one person dead and three others injured. The incident happened near the Johnson and Johnson Company on LBS Road in Mulund West at around 12.20 pm.

The incident triggered panic in the area following which a team of Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) was rushed to the spot. According to officials, the four persons were travelling in the autorickshaw when the incident happened. The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, officials said, adding that their condition is being monitoried and all necessary help is being provided to them.

The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav. Meanwhile, the three injured were identified as Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav (45), Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52), and Deepa Ruhiya (40). The condition of Rajkumar is said to be critical and he has been shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU), whereas Mahendra and Ruhiya are currently stable.

"During construction, a part of cement metro pillar collapsed and fell onto a rickshaw. Mumbai Fire Brigade, Police, Metro staff, Ward staff, and 108 Ambulance services are present at the spot. Three to four people in autorickshaw likely injured," said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a statement. 

Mumbai Police arrests 5 in Mulund metro collapse case

Mumbai Police have arrested five individuals from two companies involved in the Mulund Metro incident, registering an FIR under BNS Sections 105, 110, 324(5), and 3(5) for culpable homicide, attempt to cause death, and negligence against managers, engineers, a supervisor, and a worker.

The case targets Milan Road Buildtech, a subcontractor of Reliance Astaldi JV, and DB Hill LBG, the supervisory firm, over lapses during construction of Mumbai Metro Line 4's parapet slab that collapsed, killing one and injuring three.

MMRDA takes cognisance, CM Fadnavis announces ex gratia

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) also issued a statement and said one of its teams have rushed to the spot for a rescue operation, adding that it has secured the site in close co-ordination with BMC and disaster management authorities.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken cognisance of the incident and expressed grief over it. He also announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased. He said the government will bear the cost of treatment for the injured, while praying for their speedy recovery.

The incident has happened days after a similar accident was reported in Chembur area of India's financial capital. The incident had happened around 9.30 pm on January 31 when a portion of under construction metro pillar collapsed in the Suman Nagar sub-locality of Chembur. 

No person was injured in the incident, but MMRDA officials have said that they would be conducting a probe regarding the accident.
