Mumbai: One dead, two critical after chemical leak in Andheri; NDRF on alert

At least one person was killed and two others were hospitalised following a chemical leak in a three-storey building at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area of Andheri East in Mumbai, said officials on Saturday evening. 

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) had received a call about a chemical leak at 4.55 pm in the Bhangarwadi area in Andheri East following which it deployed its team. Later, three people were rushed to a hospital, but one of them was declared dead by officials. The leaked chemical is yet to be identified, though.

The deceased, according to Dr Raj who is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Mumbai, has been identified as 20-year-old Ahmed Hussain. The two others who are in hospital have been identified as Naushad Ansari (28) and Saba Shaikh (17). The two are currently in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as their condition is said to be critical. 

Currently, the fire brigade teams are present at the spot and are evacuating people from the affected area, which has been cordoned off. The team is trying to identify the source of the chemical leak. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on alert and may deploy its team if needed. 

In July last year, a similar incident was reported in the Ratnagiri district where a gas leak was reported at a chemical factory. Due to it, nine people villagers, including some children and women, complained of breathing difficulty and one of them was hospitalised. 

According to officials, the gas leak was reported at the chemical unit of Axcel Company located in the Lote Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area in Khed taluka of Ratnagiri, which is around 340km from Mumbai. They were rushed to a hospital, where eight were allowed to go home after medical examination, while one villager was admitted.
