Giridih Municipal Corporation Election Results Highlights: JMM-backed Pramila Mehra leads

In the latest update from the Giridih Municipal Corporation, Pramila Mehra, the candidate supported by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, is leading after the first round of counting.

According to initial figures:

• Pramila Mehra (JMM-supported): 10,339 votes
• Shailendra Choudhary (BJP-supported): 5,442 votes

Shailendra Choudhary, backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is trailing by 4,897 votes at the end of the first round.

In Giridih, Pramila Mehra, the mayoral candidate backed by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, is leading by approximately 7,000 votes. Dr Shailendra Choudhary, who is supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is currently in second place. However, official results for even a single round of counting have not yet been formally released.

Munna Rajwar has defeated Guddu Yadav in Ward 23 of the Giridih Municipal Corporation. Meanwhile, the final results for the remaining seats are gradually being declared as the counting process continues.

Results and early trends from the Giridih Municipal Corporation ward councillor elections are beginning to come in, with candidates registering wins in several wards.

Anil Ram from Ward No. 1 and Lalo Rain from Ward No. 2 secured victories in their respective constituencies by margins of around 85 votes each. Meanwhile, Krishna Sao from Ward No. 4 recorded a decisive win with a lead of 125 votes.

A closely fought contest is underway in Ward No. 3, where Mukesh Sao is leading by 90 votes, while Zakir Ansari is currently in second place.

Security has been intensified outside counting centres following the firing incident reported during polling in Giridih, where two people were shot. Authorities have stepped up vigil to ensure the counting process proceeds peacefully and without any untoward incidents.

“Ballot papers are being sorted in the preliminary phase of the counting process. The results will start coming in after a few hours, beginning with those for ward councillors,” State Election Commission Secretary Radhe Shyam Prasad said.

The counting of votes for the posts of ward councillor and mayor has commenced in the Giridih Municipal Corporation. The administration remains on high alert following incidents of violence reported during polling.

After the declaration of results, the swearing-in ceremony for the mayor and deputy mayor is expected to be held on March 16.

The contest for the mayoral post in Giridih has turned into a keen three-cornered fight. The Bharatiya Janata Party has backed Dr Shailendra Kumar Choudhary, while the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is supporting Pramila Mehra. The Indian National Congress has extended its support to Sameer Raj Choudhary.

The results will soon determine who emerges victorious in this closely watched race.

Voter turnout in the Giridih Municipal Corporation was lower this year compared to the previous election. In 2018, the turnout stood at 61.47 per cent, whereas this time, only 59.29 per cent of voters cast their ballots for the mayor and ward councillors.

The Giridih Municipal Corporation elections were marred by incidents of violence, with reports of shops being vandalised and roads blocked at several locations. In Ward No. 18, two individuals sustained injuries in a shooting incident. In response, the administration has stepped up security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents during the counting of votes.

Early trends in the Giridih ​Municipal Corporation election are likely to emerge by around 10 am, once the first round of counting is completed.

Although the counting of votes has commenced, ballots for ward councillors are being counted first. The counting of votes for the mayoral post will begin only after the ward-wise tally is completed.

Of the 1,087 wards across 48 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), voting was held in 1,042 wards. A total of 41 councillors were elected unopposed, three wards remained vacant due to the absence of nominations, and polling in one ward of the Mango Municipal Corporation was cancelled after the death of a candidate.

The polling process utilised two distinct ballot paper colours — white for the election of ward councillors and pink for the mayoral or chairperson posts — to ensure clarity in voting.

The counting of ballots commenced at 8 am, with initial results expected to emerge after the first few rounds, approximately two hours into the process. The polling was held on February 23, during which more than 63 per cent of the 43 lakh registered voters exercised their franchise.

The Giridih Municipal Corporation comprises 36 councillor seats along with one mayoral post. The results for all these positions will be announced following the completion of the counting process.

The 2026 elections are being held on a strictly non-party basis, with candidates contesting without the use of official political party symbols on the ballot paper.
