Gujarat local body election results: BJP registers sweeping victory, decimates Congress and AAP

Lotus bloomed everywhere in Gujarat local body election results as the BJP on Tuesday registered a sweeping victory by decimating Congress and AAP with winning all 15 municipal corporations. The local body elections, held on April 26, form part of a massive democratic exercise covering 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. This makes it one of the largest grassroots level political contests in the state’s history.

In the 2026 elections, Gujarat went to polls for 15 municipal corporations, including 6 long-established civic bodies and 9 newly upgraded ones. The existing corporations are Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Jamnagar.

The 9 new municipal corporations were approved by the Gujarat Cabinet on January 1, 2025, to address rapid urbanisation and improve infrastructure and governance. These include Anand Karamsad, Gandhidham, Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad, Navsari, Porbandar Chhaya, Surendranagar Wadhwan, and Vapi.

Gujarat local body elections results: BJP continues dominant run in civic bodies

The BJP has won four of the newly-formed municipal corporations of Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad and Vapi and is heading towards a comfortable win in the remaining 11 municipal corporations. Elections were held for the first time in the 4 newly-carved out local bodies. This will sum up for a landslide in all 15 municipal corporations of Gujarat.

While there is not yet complete clarity regarding the Taluka Panchayat results, the BJP appears poised to win over 215 seats, the Congress 15–20, and the AAP 5–10.

Here are the detailed results

In Ahmedabad, the BJP bagged 160 seats out of the total 192, while Congress won 32. In the previous March 2021 elections, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had won seven seats in the city, but this time it drew a blank.

In Surat Municipal Corporation, the BJP won 115 out of 120 seats, while Congress won only one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party, which had won 27 seats last time, managed to win only four.

The BJP secured 65 out of total 72 seats in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation while Congress won 7.

In Vadodara Municipal Corporation, the BJP won 69 out of 76 seats while Congress won 6 and another candidate secured one.

The saffron party also won the municipal corporations of Jamnagar and Bhavnagar with huge margins. The BJP lost only one seat each in Surendranagar and Nadiad corporations.
