Abhishek Varman's directorial Kalank may have opened to mixed reviews from the critics as well as the audience, but the first day collection has already blown the roof away. The film starring Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan among many others, has raked in Rs 21.60 crore leaving Akshay Kumar's Kesari behind. Also, Kalank has become the highest opener of 2019, defeating likes of Uri: The Surgical Strike, Gully Boy, Luka Chuppi, Kesari and Total Dhamaal. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the box office collection and wrote, "#Kalank starts with a bang... Emerges biggest opener of 2019 *so far*... Plexes terrific... Impressive cast and hype + massive screen count [4000] + #MahavirJayanti holiday have contributed to a big total... Wed ₹ 21.60 cr. India biz."

The possible reason behind these mammoth digits can be the buzz and hype around Kalank. Right from the time when the film went on floors, there was a massive anticipation around it. Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan have always been the favourite on-screen Bollywood couple for the fans, which also drew the audience to the theatres. Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt have reunited in a film after decades, which worked in the favours of the film. However, their roles are confined to only extended cameos with major focus on Roop and Zafar.

Mahavir Jayanti was also a minor factor in contributing towards Kalank's box office collection. Schools and colleges had their holidays which gave them enough time and occasion to watch the film in theatres.
