School holiday declared in several states
It should be mentioned here that several other states - including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand - have declared a school holiday for the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was the son of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind. He was born in Amritsar in 1621 and was martyred on November 24, 1675, at Chandni Chowk in Delhi by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb after he opposed the religious conversions of Kashmiri Pandits. In his memory, the Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib was built at the Chandni Chowk. Now his martyrdom day is observed as Shaheedi Diwas every year to honour the sacrifices made by Guru Tegh Bahadur.
