Gold surges Rs 11k per 10 grams on MCX, silver jumps 8% as govt raises import duty | Check city-wise rates
The government has increased import duties on gold and silver to 15 per cent from 6 per cent as part of measures to curb inbound shipments of precious metals.

Rates of precious metals in futures surged on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, after the government hiked import duties on gold and silver to 15 per cent from 6 per cent amid a rising import bill due to the West Asia crisis. The gold June 5 contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) opened with a gain of Rs 1,409 or 0.91 per cent at Rs 1,54,851 per 10 grams against the previous close of Rs 1,53,442. It continued the upward trend, touching an intraday high of Rs 1,64,497, a jump of Rs 11,055 or 7.20 per cent. Last seen, it was trading at Rs 1,62,700, up Rs 9,258 or 6.03 per cent.
On the MCX, the yellow metal futures for August 2026 were up by Rs 9,258 or 6.03 per cent to trade at Rs 1,62,700 per 10 grams in business turnover of 5,320 lots.
Silver Price On MCX
Similarly, the silver futures, maturing on July 3, 2026, opened higher. It started the trading session at Rs 2,90,224 against the previous close of Rs 2,79,062, a jump of Rs 11,162 or 3.99 per cent. It later advanced to touch the high of Rs 3,01,429, a gain of Rs 22,367 or 8.01per cent.
Gold Price in the International Market
In the international market, the COMEX gold price gained by 0.52 per cent to approximately USD 4,711 per troy ounce. The spot gold price at 10:30 am was USD 4,700.74 per ounce, up by USD 23.12 or 0.49 per cent.
"MCX Gold opened with a sharp gap-up and is trading above Rs 1,63,000, breaking out of its medium-term consolidation zone and surging past key resistance levels near pre-war highs. Immediate resistance is seen at Rs 1,64,000; a sustained move above this level could extend the rally toward Rs 1,65,000–Rs 1,66,000," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.
