In a first, scientists observe star swallowing a jupiter-size planet; will earth meet the same fate?
Science | May 04, 2023, 03:07 PM ISTThe study which has been published in journal nature said that after running out of fuel in its core, the star began to grow in size, shrinking the gap with its neighbhouring plant, eventually swallowing it.

Hycean: Newly discovered exoplanets may lead to fruitful results in Alien life search
Science | Aug 26, 2021, 05:51 PM ISTDubbed as 'Hycean' -- hot, ocean-covered planets with hydrogen-rich atmospheres, the new class of exoplanets are more numerous and observable than Earth-like planets, and can support life, said astronomers from the University of Cambridge in the UK.

Indian astronomers trace rare supernova explosion to Wolf-Rayet stars
Science | Apr 06, 2021, 07:19 PM ISTThe rare Wolf-Rayet stars are highly luminous objects a thousand times that of the Sun and have intrigued astronomers for long, the Union Ministry of Science and Technology said in a statement on Tuesday.

Chinese astronomers discover 591 high-velocity stars
Science | Dec 28, 2020, 10:38 AM ISTHigh-velocity stars can provide deep insights into a wide range of topics within galactic science, from the central supermassive black hole to the distant galactic halo, according to Lu Youjun, a researcher at the NAOC.

Why Moon's far side so different from the one facing earth?
Science | Jun 22, 2020, 03:02 PM ISTThe composition of the Moon's near side that is perpetually Earth-facing is oddly different from its far side which always faces away from Earth and scientists think they finally understand why.

2020 gives triple eclipse treat in a row to skywatchers. Check details
Science | Jun 02, 2020, 09:27 AM ISTAccording to the astronomers, triple eclipses are very rare as compared to the double or single eclipse. Between June 5 and 6, a penumbral lunar eclipse will occur, which will then be followed by an annular solar eclipse on June 21 and another lunar penumbral eclipse on July 5.

Canadian astronomers develop fingerprint of Earth's atmosphere
Aug 29, 2019, 06:49 PM ISTThe SCISAT satellite was developed by the Canadian Space Agency to help scientists understand the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer by looking at particles in the atmosphere as sunlight passes through them. With its help, the study says, astronomers can tell what molecules are found in a planet's atmosphere by observing the changes in starlight as it shines through the atmosphere.

Astronomers discover 83 super-massive black holes
Mar 18, 2019, 05:40 PM ISTThe study also provides new insight into the effect of black holes on the physical state of gas in the early universe in its first billion years.

Astronomers spot unusual star forming like a planet
Dec 16, 2018, 06:41 PM ISTThe main object, referred to as MM 1a, is a young massive star surrounded by a rotating disc of gas and dust that was the focus of the scientists' original investigation.

Astronomers identify "nearby" star system with potential to produce gamma-ray burst
Nov 20, 2018, 05:14 PM ISTThe system was nicknamed Apep. Two of Apep's stars are of the Wolf-Rayet variety meaning they are massive and reaching the end of their life.

Astronomers discover ancient star formed by Big Bang
Nov 05, 2018, 04:44 PM ISTAccording to co-author Andrew Casey, it was previously believed that the first stars that formed in the universe could not possibly still exist today.

Astronomers find signs of double supermassive black holes
Oct 26, 2018, 03:18 PM ISTThe fact that the most powerful jets are associated with binary black holes could have important consequences for the formation of stars in galaxies.
-
Scientists coin new approach to aid quest of elusive dark matter
Oct 08, 2018, 02:43 PM ISTOver the past three decades, the search for dark matter has focussed mostly on a class of particle candidates known as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs).
