The counting of votes has begun for elections to 7 municipal corporations in Telangana, seen as a key test of popularity for the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP and BRS, will be held on February 13.
On the eve of counting, major parties shifted their candidates to undisclosed locations to prevent alleged poaching by rivals. The State Election Commission said on Thursday that counting will take place at 123 centres across the state from 8 am. The process is expected to be time-consuming as ballot papers were used.
Polling on February 11 recorded 11.6% turnout till 9 am, 28.48% till 11 am, 48.54% till 1 pm and 62.09% till 3 pm, before closing at 73.01%. Elections were held on a party basis in all 116 municipalities and 7 municipal corporations. Earlier, 29,656 booth-level officers were deployed for revision of the electoral rolls.
Following its strong performance in the Gram Panchayat elections in December last year, the ruling Congress is aiming to consolidate its position as the dominant political force in the state. The BJP is seeking to establish itself as a credible alternative to both the Congress and the BRS. After setbacks in the 2023 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BRS delivered a decent performance in the Gram Panchayat elections and is looking to make significant gains in the municipal polls to revive its political fortunes.
