Counting of votes got underway at 8 AM in the five Municipalities in the Mahabubabad district as parties vow for power in the district. Elections for municipalities, including the Mahabubabad district, are part of the 2026 Telangana urban local bodies elections held on 11 February 2026, covering 2,996 wards across 7 corporations and 116 municipalities statewide. The Mahabubabad district has five municipalities: Dornakal, Kesamudram, Mahabubabad, Maripeda and Thorrur. There are a total of 15 wards in the Dornakal municipality, while Kesamudram (the new municipality) has 16 wards. Mahabubabad Municipality has the highest number of wards: 36, while Maripeda and Thorrur have 15 and 16 wards, respectively. The last time elections took place in the district in four of these five municipalities, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), then known as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), swept all four of them.
In the Dornakal Municipality, TRS won 11 wards, while INC bagged one ward. Three wards were bagged by Independents. In the Mahabubabad Municipality, TRS just managed to cross the majority as it won 19 wards, while INC clinched 10 wards. CPI and CPM won two wards each, while Independents took three wards as well. In the Maripeda Municipality, TRS won all of the 15 wards. In the Thorrur Municipality, TRS bagged 12 of the 16 wards, while INC took three wards and BJP registered a sole win in one ward. In 2020, there were a total of 56115 eligible voters, with 27302 male voters and 28794 female voters. Out of these, 43777 voters polled with a voting percentage stood at 78.01 in the Municipality. 21277 male voters exercised their rights, while 22496 female voters voted.
The Telangana Municipal Election was held peacefully with over 73 per cent of voters exercising their franchise on Wednesday in the municipal elections, which passed off well, barring minor skirmishes at a few places. The State Election Commission (SEC) said 73.01 per cent of voting was recorded. "The polling passed off peacefully", DGP B Shivadhar Reddy said.
