The Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) set the stage for municipal corporation elections on February 11, and counting of votes on February 13. Elections were held for 123 Urban Local Bodies, including 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations. Nearly 52.43 lakh voters exercised their franchise across 2,996 wards, 414 in corporations and 2,582 in municipalities during polling hours from 7 am to 5 pm. However, this round of elections does not cover all urban bodies. The municipal corporations of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Warangal Municipal Corporation and Khammam Municipal Corporation, along with six municipalities, have been excluded as their current terms are yet to be concluded.
The results for the notified urban local bodies will be declared on February 13, with counting scheduled to begin at 8 am. In Kothagudem, Ward No. 60 of the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation is among the key wards going to polls. The ward is reserved under the Backward Class (Women) category. The previous municipal elections, held in 2020, saw the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) emerge as the single largest party with 25 seats, followed by the Communist Party of India (CPI) with eight seats. The Indian National Congress (INC) secured one seat, while two independents were also elected as corporators.
This time, four candidates are contesting from Ward No. 60. They are Kasula Umarani (INC), Guda Vijaya (BJP), Beta Anantha Laxmi (CPI) and Bheema Srivalli (BRS). The contest in this ward is expected to draw close attention as voters head to the polling booths to decide their local representation.
