Are Indian women really attracted towards Narendra Modi?

New Delhi: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's conjugal life is shrouded in mystery. He has no female companion, though media reports had suggested; he had married a girl in childhood, and later abandoned her. No one is quite sure, nor is Modi forthcoming on the issue. Meanwhile, with Modi mania gripping Youngistan, Mallika Sherawat finds him the most eligible bachelor, and Sherlyn Chopra wants to become his Personal Assistant. Both are small-time actresses, always in search of limelight. “I want to send a birthday wish to the most eligible bachelor in India,” tweeted Mallika Sherawat on Modi's birthday with a little birthday jingle for “Narinder jiii”. Urban Indian women may not call Modi the most eligible bachelor, but they do find him charming and suave. A Mumbai newspaper spoke to several urban Indian women. Rani Singh, a 54-year-old housewife in Hyderabad, said Modi can deliver India from the twin problems of “corruption and mehangai”.Asked how she was so certain, she replied: “Yeh bas dil ki feeling hai. He gives out positive vibes."Singh is a fan of Modi's bright “pagdis” and says, . “Unke chehre main ek alag sa tej hai (he has a glow about him).”Delhi-based Ritu Suri (65) describes herself as an ardent Modi fan. She says he is the only Indian who can “give back Indians their dignity” and tackle intruding Chinese soldiers, the dwindling economy and terrorists. “I feel he has the power to control conditions in the country and bring change,” says another Modi fan, Delhi-based Kiran Kathpalia. She finds Modi “really powerful”, dynamic and assertive, says DNA newspaper. “Look at the work he has done in Gujarat. Ahmedabad today is a transformed city,” says Priti Gandhi, secretary, BJP, Communication Cell (Maharashtra). Gandhi was enrolled in the BJP after the party saw her effectively take on Modi and BJP detractors on Twitter with her conspicuous Twitter handle @MrsGandhi.Gandhi says: "It is the woman, after all, who has to manage her husband's income. And it is becoming increasingly tough given the current condition of the economy."Housewives are looking for someone to change the scenarios,” she says. Delhi-based designer Rina Dhaka says: “Modi is not so much about style. People look at him for what he says and what he has achieved. It helps that he is well-groomed and not portly like many other politicians."Rina Dhaka likes Modi kurtas and prefers the CM in his usual fuss-free attire than in western wear. Now the question is: are women really attracted to Modi, age 63? Is it the feminist statements in public given by him that make him popular among females? Or his persona and style that women admire? Or perhaps his moving speeches and larger than life image that women adore him. This website took opinions from three urban middle class women in Delhi to find the reason for Modi's fan following particularly among women. Shallu Malhotra, a homemaker in Delhi says “He symbolizes Hindu and Hinduism in India, which have sadly taken a back seat in our country…. ‘Hindustan'…and anyone who is Pro Hindu will get my votes.” The segment of women is probably attracted by the strong ‘hard politics' he projects. Women usually love strong male leaders who are a ‘masculine brand'. Mrinalini, an architect in Delhi, says “the sense of security, walking on the road without fear of getting teased, respect and importance given to girls and women makes him a person to be admired. Actually, the work done by him in Gujarat makes him the first choice”. “Every woman has entrepreneur qualities and values. Women will become stakeholders in decision-making if they are financially independent.” “A woman, a mother holds the highest position, highest regard in our country. Men often underestimate the female members of their family. Women are two steps ahead of men. We need to recognise their power.” Modi was smart enough to cite a good example of women entrepreneurship - Jassu Ben's pizza in Gujarat which is more popular than Pizza Hut during the FICCI annual meeting. Zara, a student of Jamia university says, “Narendra Modi can be a good Prime Minister if we look at his work in Gujarat but when it comes to 2002 Godhra riots Muslim voters get doubtful of Modi's secular image else he is good.” Ekta Mishra, a working professional in Delhi says that only Modi can make India the golden bird which India was during pre-independence. His sense of aggressive politics makes him a strong and confident leader. More than his looks and personality, women admire him for his achievements unlike Rahul Gandhi who is popular only for his charm and looks.
