BMW launches 1-series [See Pictures and Details]

Mumbai: German luxury car manufacturer BMW has launched its most affordable car in the Indian market yet, the 1 Series. The all-new BMW 1 has been launched in four variants and the model will produced at its Chennai plant. The 1 series models will cost Rs 20.90-29.90 lakh.The entry-level hatch-back was launched by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and race car driver, Armaan Ebrahim.The all-new BMW 1 Series is available in petrol (BMW 116i) and diesel variants (BMW 118d, BMW 118d Sport and BMW 118d Sport Plus).The 1.6-litre petrol variant, BMW 116i, is priced at Rs.20.9 lakh (all India ex-showroom price). The BMW 118d diesel variant, fitted with a twin-power turbo-charged 2-litre engine is priced at Rs 22.9 lakh, the BMW 118d Sport at Rs 25.9 lakh, and the BMW 118d Sport Plus at Rs 29.9 lakh.The company will increase investment in its Chennai facility to Rs 390 crore by this year-end from Rs 180 crore announced earlier, a BMW official said after the launch.“Currently, the company assembles the 3, 5, and 7- Series and X1 models locally and the newly-launched 1 Series too would be assembled at the Chennai facility,” BMW Group India President Phillip Von Sahr said.“There has been a lot of talk about the premium compact segment pushing growth here but among all our models, the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 Series will spearhead growth momentum for us,'' he said.Analysts say BMW's strategy to launch in larger number of variants will give buyers more options. It also helps gives the Bavarian carmaker a decent spread to tempt more buyers into buying a BMW.The petrol version gets its power from a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine which can reach a top speed of 210 km per hour and delivers a mileage of 16.28 km per litre. Both the engine types are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission.The car's diesel variant is powered by a two-litre TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder engine which can achieve top speed of 212 km per hour and an acceleration from 0-100 km per hour in 8.6 seconds. The engine delivers a mileage of 20.58 km per litre.The base trim of BMW's 1 Series, will get ESP, six airbags and ABS on the safety front, and on the comfort and convenience end, there are rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps and even climate control. The steering also adjusts for both reach and rake and there's one touch up and down operation for all four windows.The top-end sports the iDrive complete with Bluetooth telephony, electric power seats with memory, a sunroof, keyless entry and start, and a dual zone climate control system.
