13 killed in multi-vehicle collision in Bihar's Katihar
Earlier on Saturday, a tragic road accident in Bihar’s Katihar district claimed at least 13 lives and left around 30 people injured, according to police officials. The incident involving a bus, truck, and pickup van occurred on National Highway 31 in the Kodha block.
Police said the crash took place at approximately 6:30 pm. Superintendent of Police Shikhar Choudhary confirmed that the number of fatalities rose after several injured victims died while undergoing treatment at hospital. Initial reports had indicated fewer deaths, but six more people later succumbed to their injuries.
Many of the victims were travelling in the pickup van, which was reportedly coming from the neighbouring Purnea district. All injured individuals were rushed to a nearby government hospital in Purnea for medical care.
Authorities suspect that the accident may have been caused after the bus driver lost control of the vehicle. The driver is among those injured. However, the exact cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced financial assistance for the victims. An ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of those who lost their lives, while Rs 50,000 will be provided to each of the injured.
