The ruling Congress appears to be heading for a clean sweep in the Telangana municipal elections 2026, taking the lead in 30 seats across 7 municipal corporations, signalling a strong performance for the party in urban local bodies and putting it comfortably ahead of its rivals in the latest round of counting.

The counting of votes began in 7 municipal corporations in Telangana, seen as a key test of popularity for the ruling Congress, the opposition BJP and the BRS. According to the State Election Commission, counting began at 8 am across 123 centres. The process is expected to be time-consuming as ballot papers were used.

7 Telangana Municipal Corporation Elections and 116 municipalities elections are being closely watched as a crucial test for the ruling Congress, the opposition BJP and the BRS. With over 73% voter turnout recorded on voting day on February 11. Stringent security measures, including restricted access to counting halls, have been made at centres and prohibitory orders around the premises to ensure transparency and maintain order.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had expressed confidence that the Congress will deliver strong results, while BJP leader G Kishan Reddy voiced optimism despite alleging misuse of power by the ruling party. Earlier, 29,656 booth-level officers were deployed for revision of the electoral rolls in the state.

    Congress secures majority with 27 ward wins in Nalgonda

    The counting of votes at Telangana's Nalgonda Municipal Corporation has been completed across all 48 wards. The Congress has registered a decisive victory, securing 27 wards and emerging as the single largest party. Nalgonda went to the polls for the first time after being upgraded to a Municipal Corporation, as the contest for the inaugural mayor’s post has become a matter of prestige for Congress, BJP and BRS. Polling was held on February 11 across the district. Nalgonda Municipal Corporation consists of six municipalities namely Chandur (10 wards), Chityal (12 wards), Devarakonda (20 wards), Haliya (12 wards), Miryalguda (48 wards), and Nandikonda (12 wards).

    In the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, which has a total of 66 wards, the BJP has taken a significant lead, moving ahead in 16 wards. The party is leading in Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 22, 29, 35, 36, 38, 41, 42, 55, 56, 62 and 63.

    Congress candidate Padiga Shankar won Ward 21 of Nagarkurnool by a narrow margin of 48 votes, underscoring a closely contested race. In Ward 6, Congress candidate Makkapalli Srinivas secured victory with a margin of 94 votes.

    Nizamabad Municipal Corporation Election Results 2020

    In the 2020 elections to the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation in Telangana, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, now known as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, emerged as the single largest party.

    BRS demands action over alleged attacks during polls

    Police on Thursday registered a criminal case against Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind and several others for allegedly intimidating police personnel and election staff at a polling station during the municipal elections.
