The counting of votes to declare the results for elections to 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations in Telangana is being conducted by the State Election Commission (SEC). The polling for these elections was held on Wednesday, and this year's elections witnessed a triangular contest between the ruling Congress, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

The Medchal-Malkajgiri was one of the districts where polling was held on Wednesday. The Medchal-Malkajgiri district has three municipalities: Aliyabad, Muduchinthalapally and Yellampet. While Aliyabad had 20 wards, the Muduchinthalapally and Yellampet municipalities had 24 wards each. The Medchal-Malkajgiri district comprises a total of 68 wards.

Telangana municipalities, municipal corporation elections

In Telangana, there are 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations spread across 32 districts of the state. According to the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC), there are 2,582 wards of 116 municipalities and 414 wards of seven municipal corporations.

However, the polling was not held for the elections to the municipal corporations of Hyderabad (GHMC), Warangal, and Khammam, along with six municipalities, because their terms are yet to expire.

73 pc turnout recorded

The Telangana SEC had said that Wednesday's polling witnessed a voter turnout of 73.01 per cent, and the voting had passed off peacefully, barring minor skirmishes at a few places. "The polling passed off peacefully," said Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) B Shivadhar Reddy.

Triangular contest between Congress, BRS and BJP

The local body elections witnessed a triangular contest between the ruling Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), formerly the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Following the 2023 assembly elections in Telangana, Congress has strengthened its position in the southern state and is confident of winning the local body polls. On the other hand, the BJP is also strengthening its position at the grass-root level and is hoping to deliver a setback to the grand old party.

Meanwhile, the BRS is keen to make substantial gains in these local body elections after it suffered setbacks in the 2023 assembly polls and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
