Kamareddy Municipality is a second-grade urban local body in the Kamareddy District of Telangana. Established in 1987, it serves as the administrative headquarters for the district.  In the 2020 municipality elections, the BRS won 23 seats, Congress 12, BJP 8, and Independents 6.

Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao expressed confidence that the party would win a significant number of seats in the Telangana Municipal Election, saying the people of the state were likely to give a "big mandate" to the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday.

Both BRS and BJP have arranged buses to take their candidates to camps in other states on Thursday night, instructing them to switch off mobile phones until counting concludes. Suryapet MLA and ex-minister G Jagadish Reddy has shifted about 48 BRS nominees to camps to prevent other parties from luring them. In the similar manner, BRS candidates from Bhongir and Chandur in Nalgonda and Yadadri districts were shifted on Wednesday night.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who met AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leaders Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal in Delhi on February 12, has conveyed that the Congress is likely to secure good results in the urban local body polls, party sources said.

Kamareddy is one of the 116 municipalities that went to the polls in the Telangana Local Body Elections 2026. The municipality has 49 wards and is spread across 16.1 sq km, with an estimated total population of 135063 people. Of the total 85143 registered voters, 41816 are male and 43327 are female. Kamareddy’s population comprises 9.1 percent Scheduled Caste and 1.18 percent Scheduled Tribe communities.

In Kamareddy municipality, there are 49 wards where AIMIM secured victory with 23 winning seats in 2020. In Banswada municipality, AIMIM scripted victory with winning 17 seats in 2020 and in Yellareddy municipality, the AIMIM secured 9 seats out of total 12 seats in the last election.

Nearly 12,000 police personnel and Quick Response Teams have been deployed at the counting centres to maintain law and order, the EC said. Prohibitory orders would be in force and around the counting centres. The outcome of the three-cornered contest involving the ruling Congress and opposition BJP and BRS is crucial for all of them as it would be an indicator of their popularity among the voters. The counting process of votes is expected to take time as ballot papers were used in the election. Postal ballots were taken up first for counting.

Having suffered setbacks in the 2023 assembly polls and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BRS came up with a decent performance in the gram panchayat polls and is keen to make substantial gains in the municipal elections to reverse its fortunes in the state.

After its major success in the gram panchayat elections in December last year, the ruling Congress aims to consolidate its position as the dominant player in state politics by scoring emphatic wins in the urban local bodies. Hoping to emerge as a credible alternative to both the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which earlier ruled the state for two terms, the BJP conducted a spirited campaign in municipal polls.

Over 73 per cent of voters exercised their franchise on February 11 in the election to 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations.
