New Delhi: Indian leg spinner Piyush Chawla hit a century while playing for Somerset in the English county championship.

Chawla made 112 runs, after coming in to bat at number nine. He completed his ton off 140 balls.

Somerset were in trouble when the third-placed team Middlesex's bowlers destroyed their batting line-up and tottered at 211 for 7.

The 24-year-old spinner, coming in at number 9, was involved in a brilliant partnership of 107 runs with fellow team-mate Alex Barrow to prevent Somerset from the brink of an early defeat as they managed a pretty formidable total of 332/8 at the end of day one.

Chawla continued from his overnight score of 58 to notch up his maiden county century on the second day.

His century consisted of 10 fours and 4 sixes.

Said Chawla after the match on day one: “At one point, we looked like we would reach about 250, But now, if we can add some more runs, we can put them under the pump.”

Somerset are facing Middlesex, placed third on the table, and are struggling to keep their title hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Opener Gautam Gambhir again failed to perform in county cricket. Playing for Essex, Gambhir was out for a duck against Glocestershire.
