New Delhi: Virat Kohli may have become the fastest to score 21 centuries in 138 innings in ODI cricket, but meanwhile an aggressive South African opener Hashim Amla has already surpassed his record of fastest 17 ODI centuries after the third ODI against Australia on Wednesday.

Hashim Amla brought up his 17th ODI hundred (102) in only his 98th innings in Canberra, hence becoming the fastest batsman in the 50 over format, beating Virat Kohli's record of 112 innings to reach the landmark. However despite his effort, South Africa lost the match by 73 runs after failing to chase down 330.

Now after Virat completing his 21 centuries in 138 ODI innings and Amla aleady having 17 in 98,  he is not much far from break Kohli's another record.

Earlier, the 31-year-old became the fastest to score 15 ODI hundreds as well when he hit a century against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, once again surpassing Kohli's record. Amla achieved that feat in 86 innings while the Delhi batsman took 20 more innings to get to the mark.

This was Amla's 5th 50-over international hundred in 2014, the most by a batsman. Kohli and Australia's Aaron Finch have 4 each. Amla is on the way to take another record away from Kohli and Vivian Richards. The duo is the fastest to 5,000 ODI runs, having reached there in 114 innings.

The South African needs another 90 runs to break the record. He has 15 more innings to surpass Kohli and Richards.
