London, Sept 13: England paceman and Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad was ruled out for several weeks on Monday after tearing a shoulder muscle during Sunday's tied One Day International with world champions India.

The 25-year-old will miss the forthcoming Twenty20 series with the West Indies and then a ODI series with India in India in October.

England's one day captain Alistair Cook could replace him as Twenty20 skipper. Ireland-born batsman Eoin Morgan was ruled out of action also for several weeks last week and is facing surgery on a shoulder.

Broad revealed the injury news on his Twitter page writing: "Bad news on the shoulder: torn a muscle. Gutted."

Dr Nick Peirce, England and Wales Cricket Board chief medical officer, said that he couldn't put an exact time on how long Broad - the son of former England opening batsman turned umpire Chris - would be on the sidelines.

"Exact timescales will be determined in due course but he is likely to be ruled out of cricket for a number of weeks," he said.

"Stuart has a muscle tear within his shoulder and will require an initial period of rest and rehabilitation."

England have yet to lose to India this summer and play the fifth and final One Day international on Friday with the hosts holding an unassailable 2-0 lead. AFP
