Ashes: Pacer Mitchell Starc doubtful for Boxing Day Test due to injury

As the reserve fast bowler in the Australian squad, Jackson Bird is the most likely replacement if Starc fails to recover in time for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

The fourth Test at Melbourne seems doubtful for Australian pacer Mitchell Starc as the fast bowler's right heel seems bruised, but the leading wicket-taker in the Ashes remains in doubt against England. Australia have regained the urn as they defeated England by an innings and 41 runs to clinch the five-match series.

Cricket Australia said Wednesday that lefthander Starc, who sustained the injury on the fourth day of the Perth Test where Australia regained the Ashes, would travel with the squad to Melbourne.

It also said Starc, who has taken 19 wickets in the series at an average of 21.05, would be re-assessed before the start of the match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Dec. 26.

Australia, which has won the first three matches of the five-match series, has placed bowler Jackson Bird on standby in its 13-man squad and did not release him to play Twenty20 cricket for the Sydney Sixers.
