Know Amit Shah - Narendra Modi's 'right- hand man' who is new president of BJP

New Delhi: Finally, Amit Shah has been elected as the new President of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).Today his election as BJP president has been ratified by BJP national council at its day long meet in New Delhi.Shah along with J P Nadda,were the front-runners for the president's post after Rajnath Singh joined the Narendra Modi led NDA government at the centre.The outgoing president Rajnath Singh made the announcement in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, L K Advani, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Ram Lal and Anant Kumar.Amit Shah, in a sense, played the most crucial role in handing over a clear majority to Narendra Modi led BJP on its own. The BJP got 282 seats in 2014 Lok Sabha elections out of which 71 seats came from UP alone. The BJP's ally Apna Dal got two seats. So the BJP along with its ally Apna Dal got 73 seats from Uttar Pradesh. And Amit Shah was the master strategist for the party in the state.BJP had never got so many seats in UP, not even when Ram temple issue was at its peak in 1990s. It was Amit Shah who played the pivotal role in transforming a positive mood for Modi amongst the electorate into votes.The spectacular success of BJP in UP under Amit Shah's leadership had made Shah a front-runner for BJP President's post. The only thing that was going against Shah was the fact that like Narendra Modi, he also comes from the same state – Gujarat. They had both worked together in the past for the organization and share very cordial relation. Critics of BJP point out that the Muzaffarnagar communal riots created an anti-establishment sentiment that was fully exploited by the BJP under the guidance of Amit Shah. He is also accused of polarizing the voters on communal lines but Shah vehemently denies these allegations. His statement raised a lot of hue and cry and even the Election Commission issued him a show cause notice and barred him from campaigning in the state.Interestingly, Amit Shah expressed regret for his statement after EC expressed its unhappiness over his language. Amit Shah said that may be he had said things in the heat of the moment. EC took a lenient view of Amit Shah statement and lifted the ban that it had imposed on his addressing rallies in the state. This created another political controversy as the EC did not lift the ban on UP minister and senior SP leader Azam Khan who had also made provocative speeches in the run-up to the general elections. Azam Khan went to the extent of accusing EC of being partial to Amit Shah.
