Sania Mirza at Australian Open: See Indian tennis legend's journey in pictures

    Sania Mirza picked up her first Grand Slam title at the 2009 Australian Open. She partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi in mixed doubles to beat Nathalie Dechy and Andy Ram in the final.

    However, before her first doubles Major success, she left her mark in Melbourne. Mirza's first-ever Grand Slam match was in the 2005 Australian Open against Cindy Watson, she went on to reach as far as the third round in her maiden appearance while losing to great Serena Williams.

    In 2006, Sania became the first female Indian to be seeded in a grand slam event and it was Australian Open yet again. The 32nd seeded eventually lost in the second round to Michaella Krajicek.

    Sania reached the third round at the 2008 Australian Open as No. 31 seed, where she lost to No. 8 seed Venus Williams having been up a break in the first set. She was runner-up in the Australian Open mixed doubles partnering Mahesh Bhupathi, where they lost in straight sets to Sun Tiantian and Nenad Zimonjic.

    Sania appeared at the 2013 Australian Open partnering doubles great Bob Bryan and reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals. It was beginning of a breakthrough season for us as she soon broke into top of the doubles ranking

    Enjoying a successful era with great Martina Hingis, Sania claimed the 2016 Australian Open doubles title before they split in August later in the year.
