Gen Z hasn’t reinvented love, but it has definitely renamed a lot of its grey areas. Here’s a breakdown of the terms you’ll keep hearing, and what they really mean in practice.

Situationship: Not quite a relationship, not quite casual either. A situationship sits in that undefined middle where two people are emotionally or physically involved but haven’t labelled it. It often works until one person wants clarity and the other doesn’t.

Breadcrumbing: Just enough attention to keep you interested. Think random texts, occasional check-ins, or liking old posts. It creates the illusion of interest without any real intention of commitment.

Ghosting: When someone disappears without explanation. No closure, no message, just silence. It’s one of the most common and frustrating dating behaviours today, often leaving the other person questioning what went wrong.

Love bombing: Too much, too soon. Excessive affection, constant messages, big promises early on. It can feel flattering at first, but often fades quickly or signals emotional inconsistency.

Soft launching: Hinting at a relationship without fully revealing it. Post a hand, a silhouette, or a cropped photo of your partner. It’s a way of sharing without fully committing to public visibility.

Gaslighting: Making someone question their own reality. In dating, it shows up as dismissing feelings, denying events, or shifting blame to avoid accountability.

Ick: A sudden loss of attraction. It can be triggered by something small, a habit, a comment, or even a vibe. Once the “ick” sets in, it’s hard to reverse.
