This is a significant improvement from the previous year, when rolls updated to January 1, 2024, showed women in the majority in only 12 states and Union Territories.

Across the country, the latest electoral rolls show that the number of women voters remains 2.33 crore lower than that of men.

India’s latest electoral rolls reveal a continuing gender gap in voting, though women are steadily closing the divide. Out of the over 99 crore registered voters, around 50.7 crore are men, while 48.3 crore are women.

In total, 14 states and UTs report a higher number of women electors than male voters. These include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

This year, Assam, Karnataka and Nagaland have joined the list of states and Union territories where the number of female voters now exceeds that of men.

According to the new rolls, 22 of India’s 36 states and UTs have recorded a gender ratio above the national average of 954.

In terms of percentage, women form a majority of voters in several regions. Puducherry tops the list with women making up 53.2% of the electorate, followed by Kerala and Manipur at 51.7%, Mizoram at 51.6%, Goa at 51.5%, and around 51% in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

The trend of higher female participation is also reflected in voter turnout. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, women voters recorded a slightly higher turnout at 65.8%, compared to 65.6% for men.

These figures indicate that women’s presence in India’s democratic process is steadily increasing, both in numbers and in active participation.
