Authorities said updates would be shared once details are verified.
Around 24 people have been hospitalised with injuries, authorities said, adding the suspect is believed to be a woman.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they first received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at around 1:20 pm (local time).
Shooter died of 'self-inflicted injury'
"As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat," the B.C. RCMP wrote in a statement.
"During the search, officers located multiple victims. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury."
In another update issued shortly after 3:15 pm, police said, "The original suspect is believed to have been located deceased. Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved."
All remaining students and staffers at the school have been safely evacuated and efforts are on to reunited them with their families.
An emergency alert sent to mobile phones in and around Tumbler Ridge described the suspect as “a female in a dress with brown hair.”
Residents were urged to remain indoors and avoid the area.
“Those in the Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside, lock your doors, and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time,” police said. “All others need to avoid the area and follow police directions and restrictions.”
