Clinceni 28 May: A Romanian village has unfurled the largest flag ever made, according to Guinness World Records.

It took around 200 people several hours to roll out the giant Romanian symbol, which measured about 349 metres (1,145 feet) by 227 metres (744.5 feet).

The flag was about three times the size of a football field, according to adjudicator Jack Brockbank.

He measured the red, yellow and blue flag before pronouncing it the world's biggest.

Brockbank said it covered an area of about 79,290 square meters (853,478 square feet), breaking the previous record held by Lebanon.

"It's a fantastic day today," he told cheering villagers.

The five-ton flag was displayed in Clinceni, 35 kilometres (22 miles) southeast of Bucharest.

Workers struggled to keep it firmly planted on the ground because of windy conditions and had to use small sandbags.

Adrian Dragomir, manager of "The Flags Factory" which created the record-breaking flag, said it took weeks to sew and 70 kilometres (44 miles) of thread was needed.

"It was extremely hard work, lasting for several weeks. Me and my men worked from ten to 16 hours a day under time pressure," he said.
