Rome: Time magazine has named Pope Francis its Person of the Year 2013, calling him “The People's Pope.” Gay marriage pioneer Edith Windsor, Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad and senator Ted Cruz rounded out the top 5 slots.

Edward Snowden was the magazine's second choice.

Pope Francis became the first Jesuit pope in March 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis is vastly popular among Catholics.

Person Of The Year 2013  title comes weeks after pope criticized aspects of the global economy and “unbridled consumerism” in a document called an apostolic exhortation.

Earlier in July, the Pope was also named “Man of the Year” by Vanity Fair Italia.
