New Delhi:

A channel affiliated with Iranian state television on Friday claimed that a US fighter pilot had ejected from an aircraft over southwestern Iran. It was not immediately clear what happened to the aircraft, including whether Iran was asserting it had been shot down or if another issue was involved. The claim could not be independently verified.

If confirmed, the development could mark a further escalation in the conflict, now approaching the end of its fifth week. There was no immediate response from US officials.

The channel’s anchor urged residents to hand over any “enemy pilot” to authorities and said a reward would be offered for doing so. The broadcast originated from Kohkilouyeh and Boyer Ahmad province, a largely rural and mountainous region covering over 15,500 square kilometres.

An earlier on-screen ticker had urged the public to “shoot them if you see them”, referring to social media footage purportedly showing US aircraft in the area.

The channel also aired visuals of metal debris in the back of a pickup truck but did not provide further details.

During the conflict, Iran has made multiple claims about downing piloted enemy aircraft that were later disputed. This is the first time it has publicly called on civilians via television to locate a suspected downed pilot.

The claim comes amid intensified Iranian strikes across the region, including an attack that set Kuwait’s Mina al Ahmadi oil refinery on fire. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said firefighters were working to contain multiple blazes.

Kuwait also reported “material damage” to a desalination plant, facilities that are critical for supplying drinking water across Gulf countries and have become key targets in the conflict.

Macron questions military approach to Iran, calls for respect of sovereignty

French President Emmanuel Macron said Iran is "a very bad regime" and stressed that there is no debate on that point, while underlining his disagreements with Tehran on multiple issues.

However, he cautioned against relying on military action to resolve the situation, saying bombings or military operations alone would not bring lasting solutions.

Macron pointed to past interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, arguing that such efforts failed to deliver results even after 20 years. He emphasised that the sovereignty of people must be respected, adding that any change in regime should come from within, if citizens choose to act and take charge themselves.
