Pakistan on Friday allowed the mother and wife of alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav to meet him at a prison in Islamabad on December 25, the Pak Foreign Ministry said.
A staff member from the Indian High Commission will also be present at the meeting, Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal told the media.
External Affars Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed the news on Twitter, "Pakistan has agreed to facilitate the visit of mother and wife of Kulbhushan Jadhav and assured us of their safety, security and freedom of movement in Pakistan."
Swaraj said that India had raised the concern about their safety and security in Pakistan and had also asked that a diplomatic officer of Indian High Commission should accompany them while they are in Pakistan.
The meeting comes after massive diplomatic efforts by External Affairs Ministry, which has been trying every trick in the bag to ensure the meeting between Jadhav and his family members.
It will be the first contact with Indian authorities or family for Jadhav since his arrest in Balochistan on March 3 last year.
Former India Naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav was sentenced to death in a Field General Court Martial on April 10, 2017 after three-and-a-half months of trial. He has been accused of espionage and working for the India’s external intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW).
India has maintained that Jadhav had left Indian defense services long go and was in Pakistan for business purposes.
India has been fighting the case for a fair trial to Jadhav in International Court of Justice.
