Two shocking accidents marred the ongoing Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Haryana's Faridabad, on Saturday (February 7), leaving at least 12 people injured and one police official dead, prompting immediate official response and site cordoning.

Tsunami swing plunge: 7-8 hurt in thrilling ride horror

The first mishap unfolded when the 'Tsunami' swing suddenly collapsed at the bustling fairground, hurling 7-8 riders into chaos and causing multiple injuries. In a heroic bid to rescue victims, a police inspector-rank officer sustained serious wounds while aiding the panicked crowd. All injured were rushed to nearby private hospitals for urgent treatment, with authorities barricading the site to prevent further access.

Gate number 2 gateway gaffe: 2 more fall victim

Compounding the tragedy, a welcome arch near Gate Number 2 crumbled moments later, injuring two additional fairgoers caught beneath the debris. Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as metal and wood gave way unexpectedly amid throngs of visitors.

Haryana CM expresses grief 

"I am deeply saddened by the accident that occurred during the Surajkund Mela organised in Faridabad. I express my heartfelt condolences to the family of the person who lost their life in this incident. At the same time, necessary directions have been issued to the concerned authorities for the appropriate and immediate treatment of the injured individuals. The Haryana government is fully committed, with utmost promptness and sensitivity, to providing all possible assistance to the injured and their families," Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini posted on X. 

Haryana Tourism Minister rushes to Surajkund swing collapse site

Haryana Tourism Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma reached the accident spot at Surajkund Mela after the 'Tsunami' swing collapsed, injuring multiple people including a police inspector. As many as 26 riders were on the swing when it gave way; one person has died in the incident. Palwal-based Inspector Jagdish Prasad showed remarkable bravery, rushing to rescue trapped victims when the ride tilted dangerously.

Inspector's heroism amid chaos

Inspector Jagdish Prasad, deployed in Haryana's Palwal, lost his life while heroically aiding others during the mishap. All injured victims remain conscious; eight are admitted to Supreme Hospital and four to BK Hospital for treatment. The daily certification checks for all rides, including today's inspection, were reportedly conducted, yet the tragedy unfolded.

Probe and strict action ordered

An ADC-led committee has been formed to investigate the cause. Police have registered an FIR against the vendor, with officials vowing action against anyone found negligent. "Strict measures will follow for any lapses," authorities affirmed, as the probe intensifies.

DC Ayush Sinha said, “Around 6:15 pm today (February 7), a tragic incident occurred near the Surajkund area when a ride collapsed. About 13 people were injured in the incident. Of them, nine were immediately rushed by ambulance to Supreme Hospital, while four were taken to DK Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. In a very unfortunate development, a police personnel, an inspector, who tried to rescue people was critically injured and is currently undergoing treatment. Further details are being ascertained.”

Swift official action amid probe

District Deputy Commissioner, Police Commissioner and senior officials rushed to the spot, overseeing rescue operations and launching investigations into potential safety lapses. The fair, renowned for its crafts and cultural festivities, now faces scrutiny over ride and structural integrity, with police securing both sites for forensic checks. Visitors were urged to stay cautious as medical teams treated the wounded.
