New Delhi: In the wake of rising incidents of racial attacks in Delhi and NCR against people from Northeast, Centre is considering to make racial and derogatory comments an offence punishable with a jail term of up to five years. The statement was given by Home Minister Rajnath Singh while he was speaking at Delhi police's 68th Raising Day Parade.
As per the media reports, he spoke on furthering the spirit of “cooperative federalism” and reminded police of the new government formation in Delhi. He said, “I expect you to extend full cooperation to this newly-formed government so that it can pave the way for the city's development.”
At the function, home ministry also told the Delhi police to pace up the case of alleged vandalism of five churches and a Christian school and bring the guilty to book as such incidents create differences between communities.
He said that such incidents only “dent the image” of the police.
As reported by Indian Express, he also agreed that providing security to a diverse city like Delhi is an extremely difficult task.
He asked the police commissioner of Delhi, B S Bassi, to solve on priority the Dilshad Garden case where the entire church was devastated. He remarked that though the police was quick enough to state that these were cases of thefts however, it was not able to solve this particular case of arson.
Delhi police was instructed by him to ensure installation of CCTV cameras in minority institutions and raise the height of their boundary walls.
As per the report, details of the action plan had been sent to all the police stations in Delhi.
Reportedly, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also invited for this parade but he did not attend it.
Later, it is learnt that the police chief met him at the secretariat to discuss matters related to providing him with adequate security.
