Ahmedabad:  Gujarat boasts of being the first Indian state to implement total ban on liquor as soon as 1958. Being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, Gujarat has more reasons to lead by example in the drive against alcohol.

But liquor has found its way back in Gujarat as it is recommended by doctors as medicine for some of its residents.

Based on one's health condition, over 60,000 people in the state already have the permit to consume liquor.

According to a report published by BBC, Gujarat has 61,353 'patients' whose diseases can only be treated by consuming liquor. And, taking this into account, the state government's excise department has granted them permission to consume alcohol.

Notedly, no ruling party in the state so far has amended the liquor prohibition law since its enactment.
