6 Sales Tax Officers Chargesheeted In 100 Cr Scam, Govt To HC

Mumbai, Dec 14 (PTI) The Maharashtra Government today informed the Bombay High Court that six senior officers of the Sales Tax department had been chargesheeted for their alleged role in the Rs 100 crore Sales Tax Refund scam and also a departmental enquiry had been instituted against them. G D Parikh, retired President of Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal, would conduct the departmental enquiry against the six officers of the ranks of Assistant and Deputy sales tax Commissioners, public prosecutor told a bench headed byJustice B H Marlapalle.

 Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax R P Shinde would assist Parikh in the enquiry.

 The High Court directed that the departmental enquiry against these officers should commence on January 1 next year on a day-to-day basis and completed by March 31, 2011.

The Government also informed the Court that a Special Investigating Team (SIT) had been set up to probe the matter.

D K Sherke, Assistant Police Commissioner will head the SIT while Deepak Satore, Deputy Commissioner of Police, will assist in the probe. Approving the formation of SIT, the High Court directed the SIT to file a report by end of February 2011.The bench also asked the Forensic Lab at Kalina here to give a report on pendrives, CDs and Hard discs seized while probing the scam.

The Court was hearing a PIL alleging scam in refund of Sales Tax to the tune of crores of rupees in Palghar
division in nearby Thane district. PTI
