Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has said that the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and Lakshadweep. The IMD had predicted that monsoon was likely to hit Kerala on June 9.

Monsoon hit Kerala with heavy rains on Wednesday claiming the life of a 36-year-old man following a landslip in Idukki district.

Several parts of the state have been receiving heavy rains since last night.

The Southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala around June 1. It advances northwards, usually in surges, and covers the entire country around July 15.

Last year, the IMD forecast the onset of the Southwest monsoon by May 30. However, the actual onset took place on June 5.

Since 2005, the IMD has been issuing operational forecasts for the date of monsoon onset over Kerala using an indigenously developed statistical model with a model error margin of four days.

Met department has said that the rainfall this year would be normal to excess.

Releasing the second long-range forecast, IMD Director General Laxman Singh Rathore last week said North-west India will receive 108 per cent rainfall of the Long Period Average while central India and southern peninsula will receive 113 per cent of LPA.

The onset of monsoon claimed one life in Idukki district when mounds of earth and rocks fell on the home of former SFI Idukki district Jobi John. His mother was seriously injured and has been taken to a hospital in Kochi for treatment.
